CCSSE and CCFSSE The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) will be administered in Spring 2009 (baselines), Spring 2011, and Spring 2012. Student and faculty responses to the following questions will be most closely scrutinized:
CCSSE #12c: How much has your experience at this college contributed to your knowledge, skills, and personal development in writing clearly and effectively?
CCFSSE #12c: To what extent do students’ experiences in your selected course section contribute to their knowledge, skills, and personal development in writing clearly and effectively?
Student Focus Groups CCCC faculty and staff will moderate student focus groups during Spring 2010 and Spring 2012. Potential questions are:
• Are you aware of CCCC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)? • Can you describe what the QEP is trying to accomplish? • In which of your classes is writing a component? • What types of writing are you doing in your classes? • Are you writing more in your classes compared to last year? • Do you think you are a better writer than when you started at CCCC? • What could the college do to build your writing skills?
Online Writing Lab Usage The CCCC Academic Assistance Center (AAC) supports the online tutoring service, Smarthinking. The most commonly used Smarthinking component is the online writing lab. During the project, an increased use of the lab may indicate that faculty members are placing more emphasis on student writing. It may also signal increased student interest in writing. During the 2006-07 year, students used the lab a total of 600 hours. Student hours will continue to be monitored and the following survey questions will be watched for changes:
CCSSE #13e: Frequency of use, satisfaction, and importance of skill labs (writing)
CCFSSE #13e: Frequency of referral, use in instruction, and importance to students of skill labs (writing)
Additional Indirect Assessments The enrolled student and completer survey questions will focus on students’ satisfaction with writing instruction and preparation for employment and transfer. The employer survey will question employers about perceived CCCC graduate preparedness. Enrolled student, completer, and employer perceptions will be monitored each year; however, the comparison of the 2008 baseline results and the 2011 and 2012 survey results is considered most significant in determining project impact. The Institutional Effectiveness Office will administer the three assessments and summarize and distribute findings.
