The Assessment Team (A-Team) is responsible for developing the assessment plan and rubrics for the Life Skills modules.  The team must also determine how improvements in student learning will be measured and documented.  The group will work with the implementation leaders to verify that appropriate assessment is taking place.

The Assessment Team developed, presented and revised the assessment plan for the QEP in Spring 2007.  The full Assessment Proposal targets the first skill to be implemented, effective communications, and includes direct and indirect measures of assessment.  Direct measures of assessment will occur in foundation and capstone courses.  In addition to these two courses, the team recommends ongoing direct assessment throughout the program.  Indirect measures
will take the form of the nationally-normed Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE).  Two additional indirect measures include focus groups and service usage tracking.

Some useful assessment terms
Assessment: Assessment at CCCC is the analysis and use of information by faculty, staff, and students to make effective decisions that enhance learning, teaching, and support services.

Benchmark: A metric or standard; the actual measurements/data collected to carry out benchmarking

Benchmarking
: (Bender & Schuler, 2002): A process of comparison for purposes of assessment and innovation.

Direct Assessment: Direct evidence of student performance or attainment relies upon direct scrutiny or examination of student performance or attainment - either for individual students or for representative samples of students

Indirect Assessment: Indirect evidence of student achievement requires that faculty infer actual student abilities, knowledge, and values rather than observe direct evidence of learning or achievement

Qualitative Assessment: Collects data that does not lend itself to quantitative methods but rather to interpretive criteria

Quantitative Assessment: Collects data that can be analyzed using quantitative methods
