Advising & Counseling Interview Wednesday, February 28, 11:00 – 12:30 pm
Interview with Lisa Chapman, Joni Pavlik
College Orientation College orientation can’t be mandatory for CCCC’s population of students. Creating blogs, CDs, etc. might be a good option for outreach. Some faculty members hold a once-a-semester orientation for students in the program. This might be an opportunity to share life skills instruction.
Counseling and Life Skills Student Development Services might include life skills in counseling discussions with students. Such discussions might include: • The counselor’s role • Information on the departmental advisors • Information on proposed curriculum (job opportunities, salaries, required skills sets, and generally why student was interested in the program) • An orientation to the college • SDS services, such as financial aid • Life skills These discussions would begin to build an ongoing relationship between counselor and student. Must keep in mind that these discussions will take longer than what may be occurring now. There must be balance between providing enough information and speedy delivery of services.
Summer Retreat To ensure information is being shared among counselors and faculty advisors, an annual summer retreat could be held. The retreat might include a general session and then break out sessions with departments and associated counselors. Updates on departments and SDS could be shared. Must keep in mind that counseling on the Lee Campus differs from Harnett and Chatham Campuses.
Other If students are waiting in line, videos, printed resources, and workshops might be other avenues for teaching life skills.
