Learning the BASICS! The ABCS of Life…
Expected Outcomes
- Students will have improved access to communication skills resources.
- Students will learn how to apply communication skills in their educational, professional, and personal lives.
BASICS ACADEMY The BASICS ACADEMY includes workshops presented during curriculum course meetings and outside the classroom as arranged with faculty members beginning in Fall 2009. Possible topics for the 2009-10 series:
- Getting to Know You:Values inventory, learning styles, decision making
- Success in the Workplace: The FISH! Philosophy, Personality Types and Communicating with others
- Success on Paper: Writing/Resume Tips, Grammar 101, Netiquette Skills
- Making the Right Impression: First Impressions, The successful job interview, What to say/What not to say
BASICS BLOG The BASICS BLOG, establishing an online avenue for the distribution of life skills information, will serve as a clearinghouse for articles, Internet links, and similar resources. Items will be added weekly and all topics will complement those provided through the BASICS ACADEMY.
BASICS COUGARS’ CORNER An online, monitored discussion board will serve as means for CCCC students, faculty, staff, and community to discuss the monthly topics. The COUGARS’ CORNER will correspond to and supplement information provided through the ACADEMY and BLOG.
Leadership & Training The Learning the BASICS Coordinator will oversee and manage the ACADEMY, BLOG, AND COUGARS’ CORNER. Student Development Services staff and other faculty, staff, and community volunteers will lead the workshops. A document containing program guidelines and expectations will be distributed and reviewed with each presenter.

- Develop program guidelines and expectation guides for ACADEMY, BLOG, AND COUGARS’ CORNER
April 2008 – August 2008
- Develop template for work-study student guidelines and expectations
January - June 2009
- Finalize workshop topics for 2009 - 2010
- Recruit presenters and co-presenters through campus email and face-to-face solicitation of faculty, staff and community members
- Collect presenters’ biographical information for website
August 2009
- Advertise program through the CCCC website, the College Resources Course, and all-campus/all-student emails
- Select interns through financial aid department’s work-study coordinator
- Train fall interns; Program guidelines and expectations drafted and agreed upon by intern(s) and Coordinator

Program Promotion The program will be promoted through the following:

- Monthly e-mails to allstudents@cccc.edu
- Monthly emails requesting faculty and staff to encourage student participation in the program
- CCCC College Resources Course, a Blackboard course in which all CCCC users are registered When logging into the Blackboard system, all students, faculty,
- and staff see course announcements and have year-round access to course information
